Privacy

Privacy without losing the daylight

How frosted, gradation and reeded films give a glass room privacy while keeping it bright. Which film does what, and where each one goes.

The problem glass walls create

Glass partitions are chosen for daylight and openness. Then the meeting room needs to be private, the consultation room needs to be private, the bathroom window faces the neighbour, and the answer is usually a blind that is closed all day. Film gives the privacy and leaves the daylight alone.

Frost: the default

A frosted film diffuses the light passing through the glass. The pane goes from transparent to translucent: bright, but not see-through. It is the standard answer for meeting rooms, consultation rooms, bathrooms and street-facing windows, and it is the film most often specified as a manifestation band on commercial glazing.

A plain frost is even across the pane. The 3M Fasara frost and matte family covers the range from a light haze to a heavy matte.

Gradation: private seated, open above

A gradation film fades from frosted at one edge to clear at the other. Applied with the frosted edge at the bottom, a meeting room is private at seated height and open above head height. The room reads as glass from the corridor and feels enclosed at the table. Pre-cut gradation sheets are sized for individual panes.

Reeded: privacy with texture

A reeded film breaks the view into vertical bands rather than diffusing it. It hides less than a frost at close range and more from a distance, and it brings texture that a frost does not. The frosted reeded finishes do both.

Manifestation bands

Commercial glazing often needs a visible band at specified heights so that people do not walk into the glass. A frosted or printed band does the compliance job and the privacy job at the same time, and it can carry a logo or a pattern rather than a plain stripe. Ask us about the requirement for your building before the film is specified.

Where each one goes

Meeting rooms and boardrooms: frost band or gradation. Consultation and treatment rooms: full frost. Bathroom windows: frost or frosted reeded. Front doors and side lights: reeded. Street-facing living rooms: frost, reeded or a coloured film on a feature pane. Shopfront change rooms: full frost.

Order samples of the two films you are weighing up and hold them on the glass in question. The difference between a light haze and a heavy matte is obvious in place and invisible on a screen.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Does frosted film give full privacy?

An even frost blocks the view through the glass. Shapes and movement still read close to the glass; detail does not. For a room that must not be seen into at all, a heavier matte film is the one to specify.

Does privacy film reduce heat?

No. Decorative frosted or coloured films block line of sight, not heat. Only solar-rated films do meaningful heat reduction.
